The San Diego Humane Society is running its quarterly Empty the Shelters promotion in July with discounted adoption rates in partnership with the BISSELL Pet Foundation.

Through July 26, adoption fees are only $50 for adult cats and dogs who are 7 months and older, and $5 for guinea pigs, hamsters and rabbits.

“San Diego Humane Society has been very over capacity with animals in our care, and one of the greatest ways our community can help us is by adopting an animal and giving them a new home and a second chance,” said Jordan Frey, marketing manager.

Frey said the Humane Society currently has more than 800 adoptable pets in its care. She encourages San Diegans to open their homes to them in lieu of shopping for an animal from breeders and pet stores.

“Not only are you changing that animal's life in such a big way, but you are also changing the life of another animal who now has room in the shelter to come in and receive life-saving care.” Frey said.

If adopting a pet isn’t in the cards, you can support the San Diego Humane Society by making a donation or fostering a pet. There are also opportunities to volunteer at shelters in El Cajon, Escondido, Oceanside and San Diego, or by taking a canine friend for a walk as part of the Dog Day Out program.
