As September kicks off, we are excited to announce that we are welcoming two new interns and a new board member to the Daylight San Diego family.
This week, we welcomed Emma Chen, an International Relations-International Business major at the University of California San Diego, and Yanelli Zavina Robles, a journalism and communications major at Southwestern College.
We also had our first board meeting with Daylight’s newest board member, Tonya Jackman Hampton, an executive, speaker, and author with more than three decades of leadership experience.

Daylight obtained public records from San Diego police and the Metropolitan Transit System showing what happened at the 47th Street Trolley Station when San Diego police responded to a request for cover from Immigration and Customs Enforcement Homeland Security Investigations agents last November. The footage shows ICE agents tackling a bystander filming them, giving him a head injury.

Meet intern Yanelli Zavina Robles
Yanelli Zavina Robles, a first-generation college student and former editor-in-chief of the Southwestern College Sun, is joining Daylight as the arts and culture intern. Robles is passionate about telling stories that celebrate, inform and reflect the community she calls home. When she’s not in the newsroom, she enjoys cooking, photography and exploring the city with her two kids.

San Diego’s art community is mourning the loss of musician, creative and arts advocate Carrington Kelso, who died unexpectedly last week. Kelso — who volunteered at Daylight San Diego’s birthday bash this spring — helped organize the inaugural Avant Garde Ball at the Museum of Contemporary of San Diego before working at the Institute of Contemporary Art San Diego. His friends and family are raising money through a GoFundMe campaign to help offset funeral and memorial service costs.
Police arrested a female suspect in North Carolina connected to the mass shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego in May, San Diego police announced. The 17-year-old was indicted with three counts of first degree murder and one count of conspiracy to commit first degree murder because police suspect her of helping the shooters.
San Diego City Council unanimously voted Tuesday to repeal a decades-old ordinance regulating bathhouses that city officials said contained outdated, inaccurate and homophobic language about the LGBTQ+ community and AIDS. Council President Joe LaCava said his staff found the code, last updated in 1991, while researching another policy issue. Staff said the original ordinance is no longer enforced as the county now regulates bathhouses, not the city and its police.
The county's former Behavioral Health Services director, Nadia Privara, is considering taking legal action after San Diego County fired her amid scrutiny over years of misconduct allegations within the department, Voice of San Diego reported. Records obtained by Voice revealed cases involving racism, sexual harassment and other misconduct at the county’s Edgemoor skilled nursing facility. Top officials said they didn’t know about the details of incidents at Edgemoor prior to Voice taking the county to court, and the county responded by firing Privara last week.
The San Diego Commission on Police Practices proposed restrictions that would limit San Diego police stops, preventing officers from making stops solely on minor equipment or administrative violations, NBC 7 and City News Service reported. A San Diego police spokesperson said the department is currently reviewing the proposal.
The U.S. Navy is preparing to send another San Diego-based aircraft carrier on a long deployment to the Middle East, according to KPBS. Navy leaders are sending out the USS Theodore Roosevelt as the USS Abraham Lincoln makes its way back to San Diego following a nine-month deployment.
As students head back to school, the San Diego County-based Sister Cities Project is working to close gaps between schools in communities with robust funding and those without the same resources through its Equitable Schools Fund. The grassroots initiative supports needs ranging from school supplies and after-school programs to staff appreciation and is also collecting items for field days at three Southeast San Diego schools.
My Chemical Romance fans filled Petco Park last Sunday during the band’s San Diego stop on “The Black Parade” tour marking two decades since the album’s release. The theatrical production featured a cast of characters, including The Dictator walking around eating popcorn from a Padres bucket and an explosive fire show during “Mama.” One couple exchanged their wedding vows in the crowd during cellist Clarice Jensen's performance on the b-stage as the crew set up for the band to play songs from their other albums, including “The Ghost of You,” “Helena,” and “I’m Not Okay (I Promise).”
